


The second tier of carols and hymns, less popular, less known: "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming," "In the Bleak Midwinter," "Infant Holy," "Love Came Down at Christmas," "The Friendly Beasts," and "Good Christian Friends, Rejoice.".That core group of sacred carols and hymns: "Silent Night," "Joy to the World," "Angels We Have Heard on High," "O Come, All Ye Faithful," O Little Town of Bethlehem," "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," "The First Noel," "What Child Is This," and "Away In a Manger.".Once again, I can only marvel at the variety of music that makes up our musical Christmas celebrations year after year: I've attended, played for, or led singing at a variety of parties and programs in the past couple of weeks. We've had four Sundays of Advent and six or eight weeks of Christmas music in the malls and on television and radio. This will reinforce your ability so that it can be permanent, and will also decrease your need to hear your part in order to sing it.Christmas has almost come and gone for another year. Find some friends to sing a few other parts and see if you can hold it together a cappella. Print off the music ( click here for a printable PDF) and practice in a group.If you can sing your part while hearing the other parts too, you're ready to go sing in church. Get help from a musical friend if you need it. If you don't read music, just look at the words, listen to your part, and sing along. Learn it really well, so that you can sing your part with any of the verses. Listen to your part by eliminating all of the voices except the one you are singing.Some guys may actually want to sing the alto and soprano parts an octave lower. If you're having trouble with one, try a different one. If you're a guy you'll probably want to sing either the tenor or bass part. Start by taking a guess: if you're a girl, you'll probably want to sing either the soprano or alto part. Decide which part best fits your voice.
